Meeting Death with Intention, Presence, and Grace
As The Mindful Death Doula, I offer compassionate, non-medical support to individuals and families facing the end of life. Rooted in mindfulness, my approach honors death as a natural and meaningful part of life’s journey.
With calm presence and heart-centered care, I create a space for reflection, connection, and peace while meeting each person where they are to honor their unique needs and wishes. My intention is to walk alongside you with grace and clarity, helping to ease fear and foster a sense of meaning through this sacred transition.
Services Offered
Compassionate Companionship
Emotional and spiritual support tailored to the unique needs of each individual and family to create space for reflection, connection, and meaning. Whether through quiet presence, meaningful conversation, or simply holding space, my goal is to foster an environment of peace, acceptance, and dignity in the midst of transition.
Logistical Guidance
Thoughtful support with the many decisions and details that arise at the end of life; from care coordination to exploring burial options. Prioritizing each individual’s autonomy, I help clarify choices that align with personal values, beliefs, and wishes to help ease the burden of planning so individuals and families can stay focused on what matters most.
Legacy Creation
Reflecting the essence of an individual's life stories, values, and experiences, this process invites deeper connection and offers loved ones a lasting source of comfort and insight. Whether through storytelling, letters, recorded messages, or creative expressions, legacy work becomes a powerful way to honor one’s journey and share what truly matters.
Physical Comfort
Non-medical support to help ease physical discomfort and promote relaxation. With consent and sensitivity, this may include light touch, therapeutic massage, aromatherapy, or Reiki. These gentle, supportive practices help calm the nervous system, reduce anxiety, and create a sense of peace and well-being. Each offering is guided by the individual’s preferences and needs, always honoring the body as a sacred part of the dying journey.
Vigil Planning
Design a personalized vigil that honors an individual's values, wishes, and spiritual or cultural traditions. Whether the vigil is quiet and contemplative or rich with ritual, music, and storytelling, the goal is to create a sacred space for presence, reflection, and connection in the final hours. Vigil planning ensures the dying person is surrounded by love and intention while held in a space of peace, dignity, and deep care.
After Death Care
Support to loved ones in the hours and days following death to create meaningful goodbyes and holding space for early grief. Whether through ritual, presence, or gentle guidance, I help families navigate those tender first moments after loss with compassion and care.
Meet The Mindful Death Doula
Susan Farrell (She/Her)
Welcome. I’m truly grateful you’ve found your way here. I know exploring end-of-life care isn’t always easy, and it means something that you’re taking the time to be here. I honor your presence, your curiosity, and the path that brought you to this moment. As The Mindful Death Doula, my mission is simple: to walk beside you, with compassion, clarity, and care, through one of life’s most sacred transitions.
I’ve always been drawn to moments of transition. Those quiet, powerful, in-between spaces where time appears to slow, awareness deepens, and presence matters most. For many years, I worked in nonprofit leadership, advocating for women’s agency in global reproductive health. That same passion for dignity, choice, and compassion has guided me into the sacred work of end-of-life care. My path as a Death Doula began as a soul-led sabbatical once moving to North Carolina from Massachusetts in 2022. It was here, shaped by the memory of my father's death, I felt called to ensure no one navigates their final moments without choice, support, or companionship.
I'm an INELDA-trained death doula, a hospice volunteer, eldercare provider, and Reiki Master. I bring a grounded, heart-centered approach to every client and family I serve, blending professional expertise with emotional and spiritual care. Whether sitting at the bedside, teaching a class, or simply listening, I bring mindful presence as a steady, open-hearted companion who can hold space for grief, meaning, fear, and peace. In a world that often rushes past death, I choose to slow down. To witness. To breathe with you through the unknown.
I also serve as Board President and instructor at the Center for Death Education, where I build community through death literacy and acceptance to soften the fear that too often surrounds life’s final transition.

Testimonials
"I consulted Susan when I received a life-threatening diagnosis that threw my life into a tizzy. I knew I had to face my fears and concerns about mortality head-on, but all my friends were telling me how healthy I looked and that I had many more years to live. I wanted to talk with someone who understood that death is a natural part of the life cycle, so I consulted the Mindful Death Doula. Susan let me talk openly about my fears and wishes. Her calm and compassionate presence reassured me that she could guide me through the process in a way that felt holistic and in alignment with my beliefs. Not only did she confirm that one can die with grace and dignity; she also taught me that dying can provide an opportunity for continued spiritual growth. I highly recommend Susan’s services to anyone facing a serious diagnosis, as well as caregivers and family members who need support and guidance. It takes a village to plan a mindful death, and Susan will help you navigate the process with clarity and wisdom." L.M.
